As one of the greats, Babe Ruth once said, “Never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game.” I am thrilled to see this quote ring true for children with disabilities in the Lincoln, Nebraska area thanks to the Homer’s Heroes baseball team.
Homer’s Heroes is a six-week summer baseball league for children and teens with a wide range of physical and developmental disabilities. For each game, every player is assigned a volunteer “buddy” that encourages them and helps them with their needs. It is heartwarming to see individuals with disabilities being welcomed, supported and cheered on in these games.
Recently, the Enable Savings Plan was fortunate to sponsor the annual Homer’s Heroes baseball game, where Homer’s Heroes players teamed up with members of the Lincoln Saltdogs and Junior Saltdogs baseball teams. Aside from baseball, the event featured the best parts of America’s favorite pastimes: ice cream, team photos, comradery, family and fun.
It was wonderful to be part of this season highlight and see players have the opportunity to pursue their athletic dreams and “play the game.”
